Character Information: Here!
Personality:
As a person, Riley Matthews is best described as a literal beam of sunshine when it comes to how she interacts with people and how she wants to see the world. She's cheerful and bubbly, and constantly hopes that everyone around her gets to be happy. Even when things go bad, she's the first one to think and hope it'll get better because of how much she wants to believe in that and how much she wants to believe in hope. It's not always easy, but she manages no matter how stormy the situation is. Usually. She knows that the world can be bad, too, but even so she has yet to let that knowledge put a damper on how she wants to see the world around her. Nearly everything has a silver lining and she will always try to do her best to find it and push towards it as she experiences life and, well, meets the world. This is especially obvious when she interacts with Maya early on in the series. For the longest time, Maya states repeatedly that she has no hope because then she won't be be disappointed... but then there's Riley, and she provides enough hope for the both of them because she genuinely wants the best for her friend and wants her to have a better life.
When her friends are in need of help, Riley is always the first person to jump in. She wants to be there to help her friends and she will do whatever it takes to make them happy. She's stormed down to diners to get mad at Maya's mother for not being around on her friend's birthday, and she's gotten her entire class to write their flaws on their foreheads to prove that everyone has some kind of flaw and that that's okay, and not something to bully someone over. The ways she handles things may be a bit over-the-top sometimes, but it gets the point across in the end. The happiness of her friends is extremely important to her, and the show itself says this about her: Riley will walk through literal avalanches for her friends. It's a trait that she gained from her parents, Cory and Topanga, and she lives up to it. She's a loyal friend to the end and she trusts her friends absolutely.
Riley, much like her own father before her when he was a kid, tend to be incredibly silly. She's dramatic and creative and over-the-top. To her, there's nothing wrong with filling the world with ten million purple cats, or giving herself awards in silly kinds of ways every Friday when her school is empty. She expresses herself through things like interpretive dance. It's normal for her to just yell "YAY" when she's happy, or to just go up and hug people even if they may not be expecting it because she wants them to know she loves them. She'll play along with detective noir goldfish murder investigations, too. Admittedly, that last one was out of concern for a goldfish, but the fact that it happened in the first place is a testament to how she wants to do things. The way she reacts to things can be pretty big, too.
Sometimes, however, her excessively bright and over-the-top behavior is an act. Riley knows that it makes Maya happy, so she does it.
Because of her young, silly, wide-eyed idealist view of the world and her silly, weird behavior, her friends and family have formed something that they like to call the Riley Protection Committee because they don't want the world to hurt her. She doesn't need it, though. Not really, at least, in some of the ways they've tried to protect her from the world.
Riley's a strong person. Silly and goofy and innocent as she may be, she's got an extremely strong will and she'll always stand up for her friends... and while she may be hurt by some of the things that happen to her or to the world in general, she usually manages to bounce back really well. Sometimes she needs the help of her friends, but she always comes back and she handles the situation. Like I said above, she does have a tendency to act kind of dramatic, but that doesn't mean that she can't get serious when she needs to be serious. For example: In Girl Meets Demolition, Riley and Maya get scammed. They think all is lost for awhile... until Riley concocts a plan and gets some people in on it to get their stuff back. She decided that she didn't want to be a chump and she seized the day, got their stuff back, and then later on went to help the same person that scammed her figure out how to be a good person. She's absolutely capable of being manipulative and controlling when the need strikes her, though it doesn't come up very often.
Moving on from that, Riley's intelligent. It's not a fact brought up often by the show, but she has nearly as many As as her other best friend, Farkle, does. She does Maya's homework on a regular basis, and in general she just knows her stuff. She's book smart, even if she may not be street smart. She knows how to get what she wants most of the time, and she's not above setting up grand schemes to get things done, both of the silly and serious variety. And, of course, she has mentioned that she wants to be just like her mother when she grows up... and her mother is a pretty intense lady when it comes to being a lawyer.
However, while all of that is Riley and while she always acts like that, Riley is insecure and can be pretty shy despite her loud personality. She cares deeply about what others think of her and she's willing to change herself for it. Most of the people she knows loves how she is and wouldn't want her to change, but there have been times where what people think of her has hurt her pretty deeply. In Girl Meets Rileytown, for example, Riley did have a bully. It hurt her deeply and preyed on everything she was worried about and she kept it from her friends for the longest time. Once she finally hit her breaking point a few weeks after it started, she was able to recover with the help of her friends when they realized what was going on.
She has a tendency to try to hide things when she's hurting. She doesn't want her friends to be hurt by her being hurt, so she keeps it quiet and pretends that she's okay even when she's not. She'll often just keep saying things like "I'm fine" and smile on through the stuff that hurts her and she'll keep on hoping that it'll get better. None of her friends like this, and they try to do their best to keep her from hurting so badly because they don't think it's fair that she helps them with all of their problems and she doesn't let them help her. They don't want her to soldier on by herself, and while she does need to handle some things on her own, it helps to have her friends supporting her in the same way that she supports them. Riley probably doesn't pay as much attention to herself and her needs as she should, sometimes, too. Not unless Maya's nudging her into it.
With the people that she doesn't quite get on with, Riley still tries to be the better person. Unless she, herself, is upset, she tends to meet bad things with kindness. If she has the support of her friends, she'll make a point to stand up to whoever may be hurting her and showing that they don't have any power over her and that being a goofball is completely fine. It may scare her to stand up to that kind of thing, considering her insecurities, but she knows that sometimes, in order to handle your biggest, scariest problems, you need to just stand up and handle it. She doesn't do it without the support of her friends, but she always has them behind her just like she's always there with them.
In the end, while Riley is inexperienced with the world, she's got a really good, and big, heart. She can take a lot of hits and she'll keep bouncing back, and she'll still keep on wanting the best for everyone that she knows. There's a lot she needs to learn and there are a lot she wants to do, but she's a trooper. The world isn't going to always be nice, but that's something that comes with growing up and something that she knows she's going to have to learn how to deal with eventually. She's been encouraged, repeatedly, to make the world hers and that's exactly what she intends to do.
